But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light .

Our Mission

The Portland Church of Christ is a fellowship of men and women who desire to follow Jesus. We have no creed; we believe reading the bible with an open heart and faith will lead us to find God’s will. We strive to be a family of believers known by our love for one another. Our worship services are spirit-filled, the messages are practical and useful in everyday life.

If you’re looking for a church that is committed to living out the teachings of Christ, helping each other grow in their faith, and trying to make a positive difference in other people’s lives, then welcome home!

Steve and Lisa johnson

Steve and Lisa Johnson lead the congregation here in Portland, and they serve the community in a variety of ways. Not only are they an inspiring couple, but they continue to lead our congregations toward a more loving, united community that reflects God in everything they do. Having led churches all over the world, the Johnsons bring our church Godly wisdom, incomparable grace, and biblical truth, nurtured by their years of experience in the full time ministry.

While Steve is internationally known for his authoring of the musical “Upside Down”, Lisa is just as well known for her intimate study of women’s roles in the church.

Both are incredible leaders and we are blessed to have them as a part of our congregation.

We want to make sure your first experience is a great one!

Here is an overview of what you can expect at a typical Sunday service

90 minute services

Our services typically last about 90 minutes total and include a heartfelt worship service, reflective communion message, and a life-guiding, bible-based sermon.

Street parking

East Side Services: The church property is located in a local neighborhood and has a variety of street parking around the property. Handicap spaces are available near the local businesses along Burnside, and an unloading bay is located in front of the building in the event you need to drop your family off before taking your vehicle away to park.

West Side Services: The church meets inside the East Entrance Student Center of Sunset Presbyterian Church. The building has a ample parking in a large lot just outside the front door.

Bible-based teaching

Our messages are not only relevant but incredibly passionate. We teach bible-based lessons that help us all better understand our Creator, but also help us find meaning and passion in every day life. Through deeper understanding of scripture and historical context, we believe our teachings can help anyone develop a growing and vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ.

casual attire

All are welcome to wear whatever they feel most comfortable in. Come how you are.

Variety of worship styles

We enjoy worshipping in a variety of ways, whether that be acapella hymns or with a traditional band. Our songs of praise vary from upbeat, contemporary music to slower, more intimate songs.

Engaged children’s ministry

Our children’s ministry is far more than just physical care of their needs while you worship with us in service. We believe our children are the next generation of faith, and we have both their physical safety and spiritual health in mind as we create our children’s lesson plans. We provide a safe space for age-specific teaching from staff that have been carefully trained and critically chosen to maintain a standard of care that is above reproach.

East-side & West-side services twice a month

We’ve recently embraced the idea of meeting in smaller communities through a twice monthly split service. While the West-side families and small groups meet closer to where they’re living, the East-side families will meet at the church building for a more intimate service. Please see our church calendar for the specific dates we meet in the west.

Below you will find answers to the questions we get tasked the most

How do i know if we have east/west services?

One to two times per month we have divided East and West Side Services to accommodate individuals who drive long distances from outside of Portland. To see if we have a service closer to you this week, make sure to check out the church calendar. It will always be up to date regarding whether or not we are meeting separately that week.

What time should I get there?

We suggest arriving about 10-15 minutes early to service so you’re able to find a seat before everything begins. With this in mind, East Side Services normally starts at 2:30pm whereas West Side Services begin at 10am. Check the church calendar to see if we’re meeting separately this week!

Do I need to bring anything with me?

Sunday services will always include reading of scripture aloud. We do suggest bringing a Bible with you so you’re able to read along with the message, however if you don’t have one (or forgot yours) don’t worry. We also display the scripture on the screen so all can follow along.

How do you take communion?

For our communion portion of the service, we provide homemade unleavened bread alongside small communion cups of grape juice.

Do you do things during the week?

A number of groups meet for bible discussion and community gathering throughout the week. If you’re interested in becoming a part of one of these groups, please send us a note and we would be more than happy to point you in the direction of a group that meets closest to you and your family!

What do I do If I’m interested in learning more about god outside of church events?

We are more than willing to help anyone learn more about God through a personal bible study if they are interested. Reach out to us in person on Sundays or through our Contact page and we would love to pair you with a friend who can walk you through the studying out of scripture.

Don’t see your question listed above? Reach out to us through our contact page and we will get back to you within 1-2 business days with your response.
